Notes of Grace - Summer 2022.
By: Tony Anderson, Grace CaptainDuring our summer trips, crew members take turns blogging about their adventures while they're at sea. The following is an excerpt from the Pacific Grace's blog, written on Day 5 of Trip 2.
Hello from Desolation Sound.
We have been out of touch recently as our last two days were spent up in Princess Louisa Inlet at Chatterbox Falls, reception is non-existent deep within Jervis Inlet. Since leaving Victoria we have been busy traveling, sailing, and swimming all but the first day. Temperatures are warming up, so any excuse is a good excuse for having another swim stop.
Our first night was spent anchored just inside the Gulf Islands at the south end of Gabriola Island. Making the early slack water meant we all were up early the second day for the crossing of the Salish Sea. Part way across there was a chance to go sailing which kept us busy for the rest of the morning and into the afternoon. Our second anchorage was spent at the base of the 1400 foot falls below Freil Lake in Hotham Sound. Hotham Sound is this mountainous amphitheater of a Sound that opens off of Jervis Inlet, spectacularly beautiful and usually quite warm for swimming. After a lovely evening swim all retired to their bunks for a well-earned rest, drifting off to sleep with the sound of the falls close astern, best “white noise” ever. |
From Hotham Sd. we continued up Jervis Inlet to Princess Louisa Inlet via Malibu Rapids. Princess Louisa is one of those magical places on our coast. Almost 5 miles in length, the surrounding mountains rise directly from sea level to almost 6000 feet. Counting upwards of 20 waterfalls on our way in all culminates with the first views of Chatterbox Falls, the prize at the head of the inlet. Chatterbox is an impressive waterfall; starting high above in the surrounding mountains one can watch the water making its way circuitously down to the huge finale cascading into the sea. More swimming, enjoying the ship’s rope swing, freshwater streams, stunning views and wildlife watching kept us busy during our stay.
[Day 4] we spent making our way down the inlet and up to Savary Island which lies on the doorstep of Desolation Sound, and after breakfast the order of the day was sandy beaches, sun, and games on the tropical-like south beach of Savary. Tomorrow we are off into the heart of Desolation Sd. to Cassel Lake, one of our favorite stops, and yes, more swimming in lakes and showering in waterfalls, could be worse!
We have a lovely group on board currently, very inclusive, and keen to spend time together. Lessons are well underway and all through the day someone is learning or practising something new. As well, today, we enjoyed a brief Humpback whale show just before anchoring. All are settling in nicely as we find ourselves already at the midpoint in our journey. Kindest, Tony |
